UST marks 400 years; RGS joins celebrations

As the Philippine Province prepares for the 2012 Centennial of Good Shepherd Sisters’ presence in the country, the sisters also join in celebrating the 400 years of the University of Santo Tomas.

Established in Batangas City in 1912 upon the invitation of Bishop Joseph Petrelli of LIpa, the Good Shepherd Sisters opened  St. Bridget Academy in 1913.

Many of the Good Shepherd Sisters, apostolic and contemplative, also finished their college and graduate degrees at UST. Among the UST graduates included the first Good Shepherd  Sister in the country, + Sr. M. Assumption (Avelina)  Ocampo who finished her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1931.

During the UST Quadricentennial Celebrations, several Good Shepherd Sisters who are in Manila hope to attend the Concelebrated Mass at the UST Grounds, on January 28, feast of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Four hundred years ago, Miguel de Benavides, O.P., Archbishop of Manila, bequeathed a modest amount of money and his personal library for the foundation of a "seminary–college" to prepare young men for the priesthood. This was the beginning of the university and its library, beloved by its various publications through the centuries. The UST has become a true icon in Philippine life, a mirror of its struggles to become a nation.

Here is a list of those who studied, and worked at UST:
