"A Venture into Painting for the Glory of God," an exhibit of water and poster color paintings of Sr. Mary Aida Casambre opened January 11, 2014 at the Maurice Hall of the Good Shepherd Convent in Quezon City.
Family, friends, and Good Shepherd Sisters graced the occasion. Sr. Suzanne Sinense of Good Shepherd Community and Sr. Marion Chipeco of Heart of Mary Villa, led the opening rites of the exhibit.
During the Introduction, it was said, as the door of the exhibit was to be opened, that “it will lead us to Sr. Mary Aida Casambre’s collection of paintings, images that were given birth as she spends time in prayer and reflection at the Blessed Maria Droste Infirmary. The time allows her to be transformed, to think, pray and breathe. It allows her to venture into painting. She looks at the world and engages in it no longer in a hurried manner, but making sense of how people and God enter and engage in her life each day.”
Mounted by Sr. Mary Aida Casambre RGS, the exhibit features paintings that she said were fruits of the ‘’inner drive to express my delight and my gratitude for the gift of nature that surrounds me. In praise and thanksgiving to God who loves me and who gifted me to be in communion with His creation I then venture to paint. It is He I have come to know, I have come to intimately listen to and to love deeply.”
Sr. Aida recalled that , “It was during the “Gathering the Hundredfold”, November 2010 and the going formation program in February 8, 201l, ‘Vintage Year Journey’ that I started to venture into painting. I was so delighted in mixing colors... making brush strokes and in seeing the finish product. I was interested in going to an art lesson. In the meantime, I did some self-studying. I bought books that showed me techniques. I use mainly water-color and poster paints. I started with the three primary colors which I mix to come out with different colors. This I enjoyed doing.”
Paintings speak of and for the artist. As I venture into landscape painting through poster and water colors I see the blend of colors and the contrast in textures and curves and lines that makes up the fibers in the tapestry of my life journey. Each painting represents/reminds me of significant events and persons that have become a part of what I am today. Each painting is inspired by passage from scripture or from our Mother Founder, St. Mary Euphrasia.”

INTRODUCTION |
A Venture into Painting We are gathered before this door, which will open to us a collection of images, “A Venture into Painting for the Glory of God.” We have passed into the many doors of our lives. In a book, Doorways to Holiness, authors Gaynel Cronin and Jack Rathschmidt reflected on the many doors of our lives—among them are doors of welcome, retreat center doors, bedroom doors, doors of waiting, gate of welcome, doorways of standing, doorways of touch, doorways of challenge, of paradox, of voiceless gratitude, of wonder, of acceptance, of love, of grace. Today our door, will lead us to Sr. Mary Aida Casambre’s collection of paintings, images that were given birth as she spends time in prayer and reflection at the Blessed Maria Droste Infirmary. The time allows her to be transformed, to think, pray and breathe. It allows her to venture into painting. She looks at the world and engages in it no longer in a hurried manner, but making sense of how people and God enter and engage in her life each day. As we enter this door, let us be in touch with people, places and events in Sr. Aida’s and in our lives, for these allow us to pray. God of surprises, open our hearts to welcome them. Lead us into a corner of our hearts, our Poustinia, our desert place where you dwell. Let us hear the intimacy of your whispering voice: Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am. Be still and know. Be still. Be. Quiet my being, still my heart, as I slowly let go of your words until there is only “be”. Amen. |
