End Violence Against Women, Take Action.
The 16 days of activism begin November 25, the International
Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and
ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day.
The United Nations website reports that UN Women Executive Director
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said,“The extent to which violence is embedded in
society means that uprooting it is also a job for all of society. That includes
men and women, the media and the religious community. We can work together to
address the inequality and prejudice that enable and enflame violence against
women and girls,” Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka told an
audience that wore orange in support of ending violence against women.
The aim of the celebration is to raise public awareness and mobilizing people
everywhere to bring about change. This year, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites
you to “Orange the world,” using the colour designated by the UNiTE
campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence. Organize events to
orange streets, schools and landmarks!
"Violence against women and girls is a human
rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable
development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities and
economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price." — Ban Ki-moon,
UN Secretary-General
In New York, the staff of Good Shepherd International Justice
Peace Office announced that the The #16Days16Stories Campaign website
is live!
Cecilie Kern of GSIJP encourages all to
visit the site now to watch the campaign launch video, and come back every day
from November 25th-December 10th for daily videos, highlighting the stories of
women who have been trafficked, as well as providing questions to reflect upon,
points to ponder and actions for advocacy.
