The sounds of gongs and horns ushered in the celebration that focused on the theme, “Panag-abel ti Panangidayaw iti Naduma-duma a kultura ti Cordillera agturong ti Urnos ken Kappia” (Weaving in Appreciation of the Different Cultures in the Cordilleras towards Unity and Peace).
Fr. Ronie Degay presided the Mass that highlighted the richnenss of the indigenous culture in the Cordillera. The Cordillerans were represented by the students and staff from Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Benguet, Ifugao and
Students chanted scripture texts in their local language and offered various fruits and vegetables that showed the diversity of crops grown in the region. The MMTC musicians enlivened the celebration.
In his homily, Fr. Degay emphasized on the need for the students to appreciate the ‘indigenous soul’ that is their gift to the Church and part of the rich identity of the Cordillerans. He also challenged them to go beyond love of just one’s tribe and be in harmony with one another, including being in harmony with nature and zealous in caring for God’s creation.
A Cultural program followed the
Balweg Almeda and Michael Amagod performed an indigenous ritual that preceded the afternoon’s cultural presentation. Each tribe had its own contribution. And each presentation was concluded with a community dance. Indigenous games were also held that delighted the viewers. Snacks were served.
