Student workers, staff and Good
Shepherd Sisters of the Mountain Maid Training Center (MMTC) in Baguio City
concluded the celebration of Mary’s month last May 31 with the crowning of Our
Lady.
A total of 180 SPES (Summer
Program for Employment of Students) student workers, augmentation workers and staff attended the celebration.
The prayer service
began at 7:45 a.m. at Center I. During the Introduction, it was said that “one
of the traditions in MMTC is the crowning of Our Lady on the Feast of Her
Queenship which was instituted by Pius XII on this date. This feast was transferred by Pope Paul
VI to August 22. We continue to
observe this tradition on this date. This tradition reflects the Church’s veneration of Our Lady and her
royal dignity because of her perfect conformity to the will of God. ”
From Center I, where
the recitation of the Glorious mysteries of the Rosary began, the group moved in
procession towards the Shrine of Our Lady of the Assumption. During the fifth
mystery, the statue of Our Lady was crowned with flowers by the youngest SPES
worker--15 year-old Consolacion Galing of Natonin, Mountain Province.
The prayer service
concluded with the singing of Hail
Holy Queen Enthroned Above.
According to Sr. Rosemary Bacaltos
RGS, the SPES is a DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) program
for out-of-school youth intending to study. Most of those in SPES are fourth
year high school graduates who are accepted into MMTC Student Workers' Program .
The MMTC work force is composed of SPES workers; augmentation or contractual
workers are additional workers composed of alumni/ae, mothers and
out-of-school youth hired during peak seasons or as needed by Production. The staff
includes our 46 permanent workers -
section heads, maintenance workers and gardeners.
Those present during the May 31
celebration form part of the 287 MMTC workers.
After the prayer service, Sr. Guadalupe Bautista RGS, local leader of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Baguio, acknowledged the 22 students who came back from a four-day apostolic journey with a community in the Cordilleras. She also announced that Sr. Cecilia Torres RGS, province leader of the Good Shepherd Sisters in the Philippines, marked on May 31, her 25th year of perpetual profession of vows.
Sr. Cecilia and the apostolic and contemplative councils were in Baguio recently for the meetings of local leaders and the Province Leadership Team (PLT).
