"Forging Hope" talk is set March 16 in QC

“Forging Hope,” is the theme of the talk that will be presented by Fr. Hartono Budi, SJ on March 16, 2012 at the Rosary Hall, Good Shepherd Convent in Quezon City.

This is taken from the theme of the 2012 Centennial of Good Shepherd Sisters' presence in the Philippines, “Weaving Compassion, Embracing Challenges, Forging Hope.”

THEOLOGY OF HOPE

"What do Christians have to say about hope? What is the ultimate of Christian hope? What hope is there for new possibilities within the world of today marked by various forms of marginalization, “culture of ambiguity” and the fragility of our natural and social environments?"

Fr. Hartono is an Indonesian Jesuit who teaches at the Loyola School of Theology.  in Quezon City. He did his doctoral studies in the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, California with specialization in Latin American theology of liberation and dissertation on the A Theology of Hope  “Christology of Jon Sobrino and Contemporary Martyrdom”.

Whether addressing Christology, social theology or involvement in an interreligious dialogue, what is common to his teaching is a pastoral approach that favors empowerment of the (marginalized) people of God, a living faith in a living ecclesial community, as well as creative theological methodology that eventually will help people to be more open to others regardless of their cultural and religious background and to the signs of the times.

The talk is open to Good Shepherd Sisters and lay mission partners. It is part of the activities of the 2012 Centennial. It was on Ocober 4, 1912 that the first Irish Good Shepherd Sisters arrived in the Philippines from Myanmar, to begin a foundation in Batangas City.

A series of activities, including the Regional Celebrations that features the Journey of the Shepherd's crook are being held to celebrate the centennial.

Pondo Euphrasia (St. Mary Euphrasia Educational Assistance Fund)

During the Bicentennial Celebration of the Birth of St. Mary Euphrasia in 1996, the Philippine Province launched its St. Mary Euphrasia Scholarship Fund.

Baptized Rose Virginie Pelletier, St. Mary Euphrasia (SME) was born on July 31, 1796 in France. Before 1996, the Philippine Province helped out-of-school youth go to school. Sr. Natividad Banaag RGS was one of the sisters that screened and approved scholars; the project evolved into the SME Scholarship Fund.

The SME Scholarship Fund helped elementary, high school and college students through the recommendations of the different Good Shepherd communities in the country. Good Shepherd communities, friends and benefactors have contributed funds to sustain the project.

In recent years, the Material Resources Team (MARTA) of the Province has taken responsibility in approving requests for the educational fund. Since the launching of the 2012 Centennial MARTA and the Logistics Committee hope to raise funds to be able to grant scholarship to 100 students this year.

In celebrating the 2012 Centennial, communities are requested to gather the St. Mary Euphrasia scholars through the years, and offer prayers of thanksgiving.

Reunion of Good Shepherd Family– Australia

Last January 08, 2012, 17 former MMTC female workers and their families, from Australia, held their reunion here in MMTC Center 1 with a Mass and luncheon.

When Sr. Mary Divine Child Flood was assigned to Baguio in the 70s and early 80s, she raised funds to send 99 of these female student workers to be able to pursue Nursing in Australia. All 99 of them successfully finished nursing, found work in hospitals, married and settled in Australia.

Filipina missionaries

On October 4, 1912, two Irish Good Shepherd missionaries arrived in the Philippines to open a foundation or Good Shepherd community in Batangas City.

A hundred years later, there are 22 apostolic communities and four contemplative communities in the country. There are 140 apostolic sisters and 25 contemplative sisters in the Philippines while 32 sisters are in foreign mission.

Since the first Filipina missionary served outside the country, more than a 100 have followed to continue serving women and children in difficulties.

Like St. Mary Euphrasia, who said, “I belong to all countries where there are persons to save,” our Filipina missionaries dared to go to foreign lands to witness Jesus, the Good Shepherd’s love for the poor.

Today, there are 32 Filipina Good Shepherd Sisters in Angola, Austria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Hongkong, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Macau, Malaysia, South Korea, Sudan, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA.

We encourage others to be with us for the October 4, 2012 celebrations in Quezon City and the succeeding days of visits, October 5 –11, to other communities, or historical places in the country. Program details will follow.
