The
Good Shepherd communities were invited to this Disaster Preparedness Training, organized
by Sister Regina Kuizon, Philippine Province Unit Leader. It was a response to the MMEIRS (Metropolitan
Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study) papers that was received. The study cited the West Valley Fault (formerly known as Marikina Valley Faults)is
due to exhibit dangers within the next few years, if the estimates of an
official of the PHIVOCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) are
valid. The estimated magnitude will be
around 7 or more. MMEIRS also raised the
possible intensity from 7 to even 9 could be devastating. It will cause the collapsed of buildings in
northeastern Quezon City, western Marikina, eastern Pasig, Muntinlupa-Laguna
Bay and Mandaluyong-Makati.
The
Quiapo Disaster Management Ministry was invited to give this two-day seminar on
Disaster Preparedness Training. The team
was headed by Msgr. Clem Ignacio. With
him were Mrs. Minerva Seculles - Social
Development Ministry Head; Mr. Glen
Lawas - DPRM (Disaster Preparedness and
Response Ministry ) supervisor; Ms Rachelle Ann Corpus- DPRM staff; Mr. Jason Penon
- DPMR staff and Mr. Rolando Reyes, Jr – on the job trainee.
The
objective was: Makita kung papaano
makapag respond sa nakitang mga hazard na maka apekto sa atin. (To be able to respond to the hazards that
may affect us.)
After
an input on the different kinds of hazards, natural and man-made hazards, a
framework was presented – HYOGO Framework of Action.
The
participants were divided into small groups by communities: Provincialate community, Good Shepherd
community, Euphrasian community, SBS community, Heart of Mary Villa community,
Bukid Kabataan community, Maridge community, and St. John’s compound
community. Each community was asked to
do a mapping of their environment using
the tools for hazard assessment:
historical profile or timeline, visualization and projection, and seasonal calendar; its vulnerability were identified and strengths as well. As our guide, a map of Quezon City profile
was projected zeroing on 1043 Aurora Boulevard compound.
One
of the recommendation was that each one have a survival kit. Called “GO BAG”, a water proof bag should
contain: biscuit, bottle of water,
change of clothing, first aid kit (elastic bandage, alcohol, betadine, vicks
vaporub, cotton, band aid), flashlight, radio with battery, gas mask, rain
coat, rope (8 meters) whistle, rosary, personal medicine.
The
Quiapo Disaster Reduction Team left us with a homework: remedy the vulnerabilities we have identified
and prepare our Go Bags.
The two-day seminar concluded with Sister Regina Kuizon giving a message of
gratitude and appreciation to Msgr. Clem Ignacio and team and presented them a
big basket of Baguio products.
