SEASON OF CREATION
The Season of Creation in the Philippines starts from September 1 and ends October 4 of each year. October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. It was in 2018 that the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, upon the request of many groups who care for the environment, declared a nationwide celebration of the Season of Creation. The Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines also called on our people and all leaders of the world to stop environmental deterioration, by adopting a rights-based approach to sustainable development.
It will be recalled that Pope Francis, in June 2015, issued his encyclical Laudato Si, enjoining each one to participate in efforts to care for the environment, to be vigilant in protecting the earth, our common home.
This year, on Sept. 1, the Season of Creation began with a Eucharistic Celebration presided by Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, archbishop of Manila, at the Liwasang Aurora, in Quezon Memorial Circle. Concelebrants were Bishop Ambo David of the Diocese of Kalookan, Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of the Diocese of Cubao, and priests from the different parishes and congregations. Among those who attended the Mass and the Walk for Creation were students and faculty, parishioners and families from the different dioceses in Luzon.
The event was organized by Global Catholic Climate Movement Philippines, in coordination with the Associaton of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines AMRSP, the National Secretariat for Social Action NASSA and other groups.
GCCM is a global, grassroots movement of Catholics committed to living out the message of Laudato Si: On the Care of Our Common Home.
Last year, a Cosmic Walk was also held at the Good Shepherd convent in Quezon City, participated in by Good Shepherd Sisters, staff of the different RGS communities in Metro Manila and students of St. Bridget School Quezon City.
Several young artists from Bagong Silangan several days before the Cosmic walk to paint the posters depicting the Story of the Universe. They were guided by Sr. Cielo Matuloy RGS and Ms. Ciara, advocacy officer of St. Mary Euphrasia Integrated and Development Foundation, Inc. SMEIDFI. The young artists were formerly under the program of Headstart in Bagong Silangan began by Sr Mary James Wilson. They trained in painting from Mr. Flores, brother of Sr. Lilia Flores RGS. |
