Congregation marks 177th year of establishment of Good Shepherd Generalate & Philippines celebrates Centennial

As the congregation marks today, January 16, 2012, the 177th anniversary of the establishment of the Good Shepherd Generalate, the Philippines celebrates 2012 as the Centennial of the Good Shepherd Sisters' presence in the country.

It was on January 16, 1835 that Pope Gregory XVI approved the Good Shepherd Generalate.

St. Mary Euprasia, foundress of the congregation, sent her daughters on mission to various parts of the world. Today, there are nearly 4,000 Good Shepherd Sisters, apostolic and contemplative, in the world.

The congregation is divided into units--provinces, district and sector. These units are: Angola -Mozambique, Argentina-Uruguay, Australia Aotearoa New Zealand, Bolivia-Chile, The Netherlands, Ireland-Ethiopia, Canada, Central America (Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama) East Asia (Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand,Vietnam), Ecuador, Egypt-Sudan, Colombo-Venezolana, Germany-Albania, Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland), India-Nepal, Indonesia, Austria-Switzerland-Czech Republic, The Isles (Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion), Italy-Malta, Japan, Congo-Kenya, Lebanon-Syria, Mexico, Mid North America, New York, Northeast Asia (Hongkong, Macau, Taiwan, China, South Korea) Peru, Philippines, Portugal, West Africa (Senegal and Burkina Faso), Singapore-Malaysia, South Africa, Southeast Latin America (Brazil, Paraguay), Spain, Sri Lanka Pakistan, and the Generalate in Rome, Italy and the Mother House in Angers, France.

It was on October 4, 1912, that Good Shepherd Sisters, arrived from Burma to the Philippines. They were Irish missionaries stationed in Rangoon, and were sent by Superior General Domitilla Larose to study the possiblity of a foundation in the Philippines as requested by Bishop Joseph Petrelli of the Diocese of Lipa.

The first foundation, located in Batangas, opened  a school several months later --St. Bridget Academy (now St. Bridget College). Today there are 22 apostolic and four contemplative communities in the Philippines.

Since 1912, the Good Shepherd Sisters help in Jesus' mission through education, residences for women and children. We uphold the integrity of creation as we minister to indigenous peoples, farmers, migrants, trafficked women, the poor so that they may experience fullness of life.
